The increase will be 18% in the total flow capacity from the Spanish State to the French through the two existing interconnections, Irun and Larrau.
The expansion of the gas interconnection between France and the Iberian Peninsula through Irun (Gipuzkoa), which will increase south-north flow capacity and allow more gas to be transported from the Iberian Peninsula based on market needs, will be available from this Tuesday.
The Spanish operator, Enagás, and its French counterpart, Teréga, whose infrastructures are ready, will increase the available capacity of the Irun gas pipeline for contracting by 66%, from 2 to 3.5 bcm – from 2,000 to 3,500 million cubic meters -, reinforcing the European gas network during the winter.
This represents, in turn, an increase of 18% in the total flow capacity from the Spanish State to the French through the two existing interconnections, Irun and Larrau, with a maximum total capacity of around 8.5 bcm -8,500 million cubic meters per year.
Precisely, the expansion of the capacity of the Irun interconnection is one of the measures of solidarity with the neighboring countries of Europe included in the More Energy Security Plan, approved by the Spanish Government on the occasion of the current crisis in the field of energy.
Looking to the future, connections between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe are expected to increase after the recent agreement reached between Spain, Portugal and France to replace the MidCat project with a hydrogen corridor connecting Barcelona and Marseille, baptized like BarMar.
