Non-educational workers from across the country and school teachers in districts south of Leiria will strike this Friday demanding better working conditions and wages and the creation of specific jobs.
The non-teachers’ strike was called by the National Federation of Trade Unions of Public and Social Workers, which is also organizing a march between Jardim da Estrela in Lisbon and the Ministry of Education in the presence of the General Secretary of the CGTU.
Professionals demand the creation of special professions of educational activities assistant, educational activities assistant and school administration, as well as the promotion of the career of the chief technical officer and the unification of all specialized technicians.
On the other hand, they also ask for a revision of the regulation on the ratio and distribution of non-teaching staff in order to meet the needs of schools.
For teachers, a two-day strike continues, announced by the platform of nine trade union organizations, including the national federations of teachers (Fenprof) and education (FNE), the most representative in the sector.
This Friday school teachers in the southern districts of Leiria are on strike.
Schools, however, will have to provide minimum services set on Monday by the arbitration court, which considered that this stoppage of teachers “cannot be regarded simply as a one-day strike that will only cause ordinary and legal disturbances, which any strike always causes”, but rather as “another strike in the sum of the strikes that as a whole already threaten to jeopardize the right to education.”
According to the decision, teachers must guarantee three hours of classes in preschool and 1st cycle, as well as three daily classroom periods in 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary education, to guarantee weekly coverage of various disciplines. .
In addition to classes, support should also be provided for students who benefit from complementary measures within inclusive education, therapeutic support, support for students in vulnerable situations, enrollment of students in units integrated into Learning Support Centers, and continuity of activities aimed at social and emotional well-being. .
Following the arbitration board’s decision, nine trade union organizations announced that they would jointly file a lawsuit against minimum services.
On the other hand, some will submit subpoenas to suspend these minimal services, while others will take precautionary measures.
On Saturday, teachers return to the streets with two demonstrations in Lisbon and Porto, originally scheduled on different days.
Both actions are scheduled for 15:30, two protests start from Rossio in Lisbon and Marquis Square in Porto and head to the Assembly of the Republic and Avenida dos Aliados respectively.
