The Minister of National Defense said this Saturday in Matosinhos that the process of transition from the former facilities of the Military Technical Headquarters in Porto to the Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU) “is in progress”.
The goal, explained Helena Carreira, is to provide space through economic lease programs.
The Portuguese army has reinforced fences at several points in the former military service barracks in Porto, which are usually frequented by drug addicts.
“We are taking measures to strengthen the sealing of these facilities, as has happened in the past. These are buildings that are already in the process of being transferred to the Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation in order to be included in economic lease programs, and this is in the process of implementation,” he said.
However, he added, “we must ensure the safety of the installations, and this has been done in cooperation with the city council, and I believe we will continue to do so.”
This process, he added, will achieve “an equally important goal” as providing affordable housing for rent, as well as putting an end to possible situations of inappropriate occupation.
In a letter sent on January 26 to the defense minister, to which Lusa had access, the mayor of Porto urged the ministry to take action to address the “serious security problem” of the military service barracks and the House of Supervision.
