Strike in France against pension reform blocks oil refineries

Fuel output from all refineries in France was blocked on Tuesday morning in another day of protests against the pension reform bill, trade union CGT-Chimie told AFP.

According to the same source, the refineries of TotalEnergies, Esso-ExxonMobil and Petroineos are “locked down” at the joint appeal of the unions.

Workers are protesting that the government withdraws a bill that is before Parliament.

New demonstrations, strikes and blockades are protests planned for this Tuesday in France against the pension reform advocated by Emmanuel Macron and due to be voted on in the coming days.

This is the sixth day of the mobilization, which the unions say will be of great importance and is also seen as a “big test” for the French government.

The Parisian leader wants to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 years, claiming that in this way he manages to guarantee the “funding” of the French social model.

Opponents of the reform consider the bill “unfair” because of the serious wage penalty.

Opinion polls released in France show it is an “unpopular” measure.

Laurent Bergé, general secretary of the reformist CFDT union, told France Presse it would be “an extremely strong day of mobilization” and asked President Emmanuel Macron not to “plug his ears” in the face of the protests.

Contrary to trade union claims, Prime Minister Elisabeth Bourne warned of the impact of protests and “isolation” affecting “more humble” French people.

On the night of Monday to Tuesday, protesters began to block the main road in Rennes in western France, a reporter from Agence France Presse (AFP) reported.

On January 31, the unions said more than 2.5 million protesters across the country took part in the protests (1.27 million, according to authorities).

Between 1.1 and 1.4 million people are expected to take to the streets on Tuesday, according to a French police source.

The CGT, a trade union organization, is preparing a total of 265 rallies and demonstrations throughout the country.
