“There is forgiveness in the Church: the bishop wants to forgive priests suspected of sexual harassment to minors

The bishop of the run of D. Zhuan Marcos proposed to pardon priests suspected of sexual violence against minors. In an interview with SIC, the monk emphasized the importance of forgiveness in the Catholic Church for those who show repentance and/or tries to change their behavior.

“We are all sinners, we are all limited, we all have shortcomings. This approach is not very Catholic. There is forgiveness in the Catholic Church,” he defended. D. João Marcos notes that the approach to these cases “was not very Catholic”.

Cases of sexual violence in the church became known in February after the independent commission published a report in which data has been collected over the past 72 years. 4815 victims have been identified. Most of the sexual aggressors were priests.

Only nine situations have been revealed in the Bezhsky diocese, but the bishop says that he is still unknown to the names of suspicious parish priests. D. Joao Marcos was one of those who did not respond to the request for contact from the independent commission for the study of sexual violence in the church.
