Some 129,000 people have reached the highest level of food insecurity in the Greater Horn of Africa, which has been plagued by severe drought for several years, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned this Friday.
“When I talk about the Greater Horn of Africa, I mean Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda,” explained Lisbeth Elbrecht, WHO Regional Representative for the region, speaking via videoconference from Nairobi.
In the region, Albrecht said, we are “watching a surge in epidemics and the largest number of malnourished children in years, affecting millions of people, all against a backdrop of worsening prospects for food insecurity.”
