In 2022, five large banks headquartered in Portugal laid off 635 employees.

The five major banks, headquartered in Portugal, laid off a total of 635 employees in 2022 and also reduced their structure by 104 service points.

Among the financial institutions analyzed, Caixa Geral de Depósitos was the one with the most staff cuts, ending 2022 with 5,837 employees, down 280 from December 31 of the previous year.

In turn, the number of branches of state-owned banks decreased by 27 to 515.

Santander Totta lost 141 workers in 2022, to 4,664. Its network has been reduced by eight to 339 branches.

Novo Banco, the latest to announce 2022 results, lost 103 employees last year and closed 19 branches, ending the year with 4,090 employees and 292 branches.

Below 100 abbreviations were BCP and BPI.

At BPI, the number of employees was reduced by 74 people, and the number of branches was reduced by 24 people.

BCP, which employs the most workers, ended 2022 with 6,252 workers, losing 37 people in its workforce over the past year.

However, the number of bank branches decreased by 26 to 408.

At the end of 2022, the analyzed banks had a total of 25,247 employees and 1,879 branches.
