Zelensky considers changing the name of Russia, the Kremlin proposes to rename Ukraine to the “Kingdom of pigs”

The President of Ukraine will study an electronic petition with 25,000 signatures that proposes to officially change the name “Russia” to “Moscow”, a proposal rejected by the Kremlin, which retaliated and proposed changing the name of Ukraine to the “Kingdom of Pigs”.

According to the Ukrainian news agency Unian, the author of the petition claims that the historical name of Russia is Muscovy, so he also advocates replacing the words “Russian” with “Moscow” and “Russian Federation” with “Moscow Federation”.

“This name was used in Europe and in some Asian languages. Many historical maps of the 16th and 19th centuries, which were compiled in Europe before and after the change of name from the Muscovy to the Russian Empire, also feature this name,” the petition says.

The author also points out that Russia has existed for 301 years, starting from October 22, 1721, when the Moscow Tsar Peter I proclaimed the Moscow kingdom the “Russian Empire”.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy pointed out this Saturday that the issue raised in the petition “requires careful study from the point of view of the historical and cultural context and taking into account possible international legal consequences.”

The President of Ukraine added that he instructed Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to analyze and deepen the issue with scientific institutions.

Kiev’s proposal was sharply criticized by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who, in his personal account on the social network Telegram, “advised” Ukraine to change its name to the “Kingdom of Pigs”, “followers of the Ukrainian nationalist and Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera.” “.

“The Nazi high command in Kiev undertook to study the issue of renaming Russia to Muscovy. Well, what can I say? What is our answer? Certainly not Zhoylandia (a derogatory nickname for Ukrainians). , — Medvedev wrote in Telegram.

Bandera, whom Kiev considers a national hero, led a nationalist movement during World War II that was behind the massacre of some 100,000 non-Ukrainian civilians in Volhynia and collaborated with the occupying forces of Nazi Germany, for which it is highly hated in both Poland and Russia.

The former Russian president, known for his offensive political comments, was joined by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakhatrova, who said Zelensky’s proposal “proves” that Moscow is “right every day.”

“Here is a new attempt to make Ukraine ‘anti-Russian’,” Zakharova wrote on her personal account on the same social network.

The idea of renaming the Russian Federation into Muscovy is not new for Ukraine.

Back in 2019, Zelensky’s political adviser Nikita Poturaev made a proposal on this matter, and later journalist Aider Muzhdabaev said that changing the name of Russia to Muscovy would have historical grounds.

The Russian military offensive into Ukraine, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
