A 74-year-old man died this Sunday after the car he was driving fell into an 80-meter ravine in Coimbra.
The accident happened at the entrance to the house where he lived, on Via Antonio Sousa, around 18:00. José Cortes Magalhães, a former bank clerk, was trying to break into the house when the car skidded. During the fall, the victim was thrown out of the car, which was immobilized in a hard-to-reach place and dense vegetation.
To try to help the driver and the only passenger of the car, firefighters had to get to the place through an external circular. “It was quite difficult. The firefighters had to wade through vegetation to get to the site,” said Fernando Nogueira of the Coimbra sappers.
“When we first approached the car, we did not find anyone inside. We conducted a wider search and found that the victim was about five meters from the car,” he said. The victim was still treated with resuscitation, but he was pronounced dead on the spot.
