PCP wants to end golden visas on a budget

The PKP wants to end the provision of golden visas in the 2023 state budget as it believes the government has a “good opportunity” to implement this.

PKP will propose an end to golden visas, it remains to be seen if the government actually has the political will to end [aos ‘vistos gold’] and has a good opportunity in the state budget to accompany the PKP,” said the leader of the communist parliament, Paula Santos, on the sidelines of a demonstration of teachers in front of the Assembly of the Republic.

Prime Minister António Costa announced this Wednesday that the socialist executive is evaluating the continuity of the golden visa regime for obtaining a residence permit in Portugal.

“There are programs that we are currently reviewing, and one of them is the “golden visas”, which, probably, have already fulfilled their function, which they were supposed to fulfill, and which are not justified at the moment,” António Costa said. .

After these statements by the prime minister, the leader of the communist bench considered that this regime only “brought speculation” and “increased difficulties in housing, while prices rose in a very significant way”, which translates as “many difficulties for many families.”

“This is a regime that does not benefit our country, and therefore we believe that it should be ended,” he added.

In the party’s proposed amendment to next year’s budget law, the Communists believe that the “golden visas” are “a clear contribution to real estate speculation and creating difficulties in the rental market.”

“By December 2021, 10,254 residence permits had been issued, of which 9,585 were through real estate purchases, 649 were through capital transfers, and only 20 were through job creation,” the party adds.

From the PCP’s point of view, the residence permit in the country “should not be commercialized” and the criterion “cannot be the availability of money.”
