CPLP Immigrants Can Get Residence Permit Online Starting Today

About 150,000 immigrants from Portuguese-speaking countries in Portugal, whose cases are pending in the SEF, can automatically receive a residence permit from this Monday through the “CPLP portal”.

A new platform for obtaining a residence permit in Portugal for citizens of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) as part of the mobility agreement between member states of the organization was introduced on Friday by the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF).

In addition to CPLP immigrants whose processes are pending at the SEF until December 2022, citizens with CPLP visas issued by Portuguese consulates after October 31, 2022 can also obtain a residence permit “fully automatically and “online”,” he explained. SEF.

Fernando Silva explained that these citizens can access the “CPLP portal” through the SEF and ePortugal.gov websites and apply for a residence permit.

The director emphasized that these residence permit benefits are provided “only online”, without the need for any other interaction with the service or physical visit to the service point.”

However, in the case of minors participating in the legalization process, it is necessary to go “then to the SEF service point”.

According to the same official, a CPLP immigrant residence permit would cost €15 and would take “generally 72 hours” to have the document available electronically.

Fernando Silva said that in the second phase, this process will be extended to CPLP citizens who are in Portugal and have not yet applied for a residence permit with the SEF or have done so after January 2023.

The SEF director also said that in the near future the “CPLP portal” for obtaining a residence permit will be available only on the website ePortugal.gov.

CPLP citizens who intend to travel to Portugal from now on do not need to establish any contact with the SEF, they only need to apply to the Portuguese consulates in their countries of origin to obtain a visa to Portugal.

In addition to Portugal, Cape Verde, Brazil, Timor-Leste, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe, Angola and Mozambique are part of the CPLP.
