The decision on the presence of Russian and Belarusian athletes at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will not depend on the local Organizing Committee, which is more concerned with how to support the Ukrainians.
500 days before the opening ceremony of the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad, the president of the Organizing Committee, Tony Estangue, says that Paris 2024 cannot be a priority, and the war in Ukraine can end quickly and “how best to support the Ukrainian people, Ukrainian athletes.”
“IOC [Comité Olímpico Internacional], depending on what the international federations are doing, and even if the Russian and Belarusian athletes have qualified, you will be able to tell if you accept them for these Games. This decision has not yet been made. AND [o Comité Organizador de] Paris 2024 has no right to decide,” he told AFP.
Despite this, Estanguet suggests that there were conversations on this topic with French President Emmanuel Macron.
“Obviously, there were conversations between us and the President of the Republic, between the President and the IOC, which may share his position, but the final decision remains with the IOC,” he suggested.
The Russian military offensive on the territory of Ukraine, launched on February 24, 2022, plunged Europe into the most serious security crisis since the Second World War (1939-1945).
