The ELA union has denounced that the pension reform, agreed by the Spanish Government with the CCOO and UGT unions, approves cuts, consolidates those approved by Zapatero, UGT and CCOO in 2011, and makes it easier for them to exist in the future.
ELA considers it essential to give an answer, and has announced demonstrations on April 4 in Bilbao and Pamplona to reject this reform and “demand a public pension system that guarantees sufficient income.”
In a press conference held this morning in San Sebastián, ELA has made an assessment of the pension reform. The general secretary of ELA, Mitxel Lakuntza, has stated that “the official version of a reform without cuts is not sustained.” On the one hand, he has indicated that “the number of years that are taken into account to calculate the pension is extended to all people under 50 years of age”, which means a cut in the amount of the pension. On the other hand, he has denounced that the Spanish government is trying to hide the fact that it is putting a spending limit on pensions. He added that from 2025 and every 3 years, the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF), an organization whose objective is to guarantee the principle of budget stability, “may propose the measures it deems appropriate, opening the doors to future cuts”.
Lakuntza stressed that although the Spanish government’s agreement with the EU to reform pensions has not been carried out “to its full extent”, the Sánchez government had to go “further” to guarantee pensions with a “dignified” amount “.
Regarding the role of the left, Lakuntza has recognized that the reform would have been worse without the opposition of Unidas Podemos and EH Bildu, but encourages these parties to vote against “if the regressive elements of the reform are maintained, and if they do not reverses the 2011 cuts”.
