On Tuesday, the PKP considered that the two billion euro package approved by the European Union for the production of munitions for Ukraine was “igniting war” and aimed at “bringing destruction and further death” to the Ukrainian people.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a visit to the Gulbenkian Institute of Science in Oeiras, PKP leader Paulo Raimundo believes the 2 billion euro package approved on Monday by the European Union is aimed at producing and providing munitions for a large-caliber attack on Ukraine. , aimed at “igniting war.”
“It even puzzles me a little how people are satisfied with measures that have exactly this intention, namely the continuation of the war, destruction, an increase in deaths, in particular for the Ukrainian people, but not only. I understand the logic of this disturbing militaristic path,” said Paulo Raimundo.
Paulo Raimundo said that at the moment, measures are needed “on the path of peace”, and not in order to “add fuel to the fire.”
Asked about Portugal’s participation in this support package, Paulo Raimundo said it cost him the “hardline” with which the decision was made and accused the government of ignoring the Constitution.
“This is not the Wild West. The Portuguese government has a fundamental law that stipulates this. (…) Our Constitution defines that the role of the state, sovereign bodies and government is also to build the path of peace and cooperation,” he said.
Thus, the communist leader urged the executive to “respond to what is the fundamental law” and do “everything in its power, put everything within its reach to pave the way for peace.”
“This is what people need, they don’t need war,” he stressed.
When asked if the PKP was “for Putin and the war” – after the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta called the PKP the party that most often abstained or voted against European Parliament resolutions condemning the Kremlin – Paulo Raimundo showed himself “greatly offended” and stated that it was “one of the most ridiculous things you can hear”.
“If there is one thing you cannot accuse us of, it is that we are for the war, on the contrary. two billion euros of ammunition for the war, they are for the war,” he stressed.
The PKP General Secretary also mentioned that the party will always support “all resolutions about the truth”, adding that “the truth is not that the Kremlin is bad or the Kremlin is good”.
“The truth is that three players are very clearly involved in the war: Russia, the United States, NATO and the European Union, and this cannot be hidden, because if you do not understand who is intervening in the war, it is difficult to find ways of peace,” he stressed. He.
The Communist leader also added that if his party had “sent something decisively, this war should never have started.”
On Monday, 27 EU member states approved a 2 billion euro package for the production and supply of large-caliber ammunition to Ukraine.
The two billion euros are earmarked for the production of 155mm munitions, which Ukraine requested a few weeks ago to continue repelling an invasion of the Russian Federation that began more than a year ago.
According to Defense Minister Elena Carreiras, Portugal will be one of 18 European states that will participate in this project to jointly purchase ammunition for Ukraine.
