Two prisoners dug a tunnel with a toothbrush and managed to escape from a prison in Newport News, Virginia, USA. The pair were found hours later in a pancake shop, authorities said. NBC.
John Garza, 37, and Arlie Nemo, 43, went missing during a routine vote count around 7 p.m. Monday night, the Newport News Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The couple managed to dig the tunnel using “primitive manufacturing tools” they built from a toothbrush and a metal object.
They were discovered by the authorities in the cafe of the American pancake chain IHOP in Hampton, Virginia, where they were detained by the police. “I am grateful to the citizens who watched Garza and Nemo at IHOP and notified the authorities,” Sheriff Gabe Morgan said in a statement.
Garza was in custody on charges including contempt of court, parole violation, and failure to appear. According to the sheriff’s office, Nemo was being held on charges of credit card fraud, credit card theft, forgery, possession of hacking tools, theft, contempt of court, and violation of probation. Escape charges are pending against both prisoners.
