Portuguese coach Roberto Martínez this Wednesday underlined the “commitment” of the players in the team’s early days and reminded that the Euro 2024 qualifying clash against Liechtenstein is “worth three points”.
“It will not be a friendly game. This game is worth three points. That’s why we need a personalized team with the ball and control. We must have a clearly defined strategy and show a very high level when we face a very closed team. There is no room for error. It’s about winning and growing,” stated Roberto Martinez.
The new national coach spoke to reporters at the Cidade do Futebol in Oeiras at a press conference ahead of the Group J meeting scheduled for Thursday at the José Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon.
“I am surprised by the level of commitment of the national team players. Everyone can play. We are starting a new cycle and want the best. Ronaldo is one of the best and we need his experience,” Martinez said.
The 49-year-old coach explained that Ronaldo, as he is the most prolific player, will remain captain, but if he is not used or is no longer on the pitch, goalkeeper Rui Patricio and Bernardo Silva will be eligible for the armband as they are second. and third players with more games for the Kinas team, respectively.
The Portugal-Liechtenstein match is scheduled for 19:45 at the José Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon and will be officiated by Norway’s Espen Escas.
Three days later, Portugal play in the second round of Group J in Luxembourg. The group also includes Iceland, Slovakia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
