NATO asks Switzerland to lift arms re-export ban

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and “many allies” this Wednesday asked Swiss Defense Minister Viola Amherd to reconsider the ban on the re-export of domestic weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.

At a meeting with Secretary General of the Alliance of Europe and North America, Viola Amherd, he called on the Swiss government to reconsider its position on the ban, which prevents allies from providing greater support to Kiev, NATO said in a statement. .

Jens Stoltenberg argued that “allies and partners are helping Ukraine defend its right to self-defence, enshrined in the UN Charter.”

The demand, which according to NATO, the Swiss minister also heard from “many allies” of the organization, “as long as the country continues to resist Russia’s aggressive war.”

The Allies, according to the statement, also expressed their gratitude to Switzerland for its close cooperation with NATO, including for its significant contribution to ensuring stability in the Western Balkans.

Jens Stoltenberg stressed that Switzerland’s neutrality is not an obstacle to cooperation with NATO and welcomed the country’s commitment to further deepen cooperation with NATO.
