The Infrastructure Minister announced this Wednesday the establishment of a CP train plant that will create 1,000 jobs. João Galamba also said that “CP is strengthening the workforce” and that “the issue of wages is an issue”, but that his ministry and finance ministry are committed to “giving companies more autonomy”.
João Galamba emphasized that the railway “is a way to industrialize the country”, advocating the creation of initiatives that “turn into investments” if they are linked to existing units. As a reminder, the public train maintenance company (EMEF) was taken over by CP in 2020. On the other hand, Portugal’s only train manufacturing plant located in Amadora was closed in 2004 by the Canadian company Bombardier.
According to the minister, “CP will complete the offer with 117 new trains, while guaranteeing at least one new factory in Portugal”, with a thousand jobs in mind.
Meanwhile, João Galamba this Wednesday ensured that the tender to be issued for serving bars on trains would be “valid until the end of the year” and that CP would also request an analysis to assess the integration of workers, putting an end to out-of-company hiring.
The work of the bar on trains, temporarily suspended, is in concession for Apeadeiro 2020, which will not receive wages for the last two months. In protest, these workers went on strike earlier this month.
