Interior Minister José Luis Carneiro said on Tuesday that the Centro Ismaelita striker in Lisbon was “a beneficiary of international protection status”.
In response to a question from journalists, the minister provided additional information about the aggressor. The striker is “relatively young” and has three children aged 4, 7 and 9. The wife of the attacker died in Greece in a refugee camp. The man was resettled in Portugal as part of the European cooperation.
“Everything suggests that this is a single act, but the circumstances and motives [do ataque] are now being investigated by the judicial police,” the minister said.
José Luis Carneiro wished that “justice be done for such a tragic act that affected the entire national community” and also expressed “recognition and gratitude” to the Public Security Police, which demonstrated the “high level of efficiency” of the security forces.
