Portugal has been used as a vehicle to support illegal immigration. Arrests for document fraud increased by 123% in 2022, and solicitors and lawyers may be involved in the schemes.
2022 National Security Annual Report (RASI), cited Publicemphasizes the growth of “organized criminal groups who, in exchange for large sums of money, can facilitate both the transportation of these citizens to the country’s territory and the documents necessary for this purpose.”
The report indicates that several people living in other countries of the European Union come to Portugal to legalize their citizenship using fake documents. The most forged documents are employment contracts, police clearance certificates, medical certificates, certificates of admission to higher educational institutions and certificates of residence.
Several immigrants featured in the report show that they have been able to renew their residence permits through non-commercial for-profit companies set up only to facilitate employment contracts for immigrants.
