The artist exhibits “Mangito” in front of the Belen Palace

Artist Carlos Oliveira exhibited this Monday, at 7:30 am, a two-meter-tall “cuff” in front of the Belém Palace in Lisbon.

The work, the artist said in a statement, is “an act of manifestation and art, of awareness and rebellion against the general insecurity of the population” and expresses “dissatisfaction and resentment” in a popular gesture inspired by the figure of Ze. Povinho by Bordalo Pine.

“The piece has been with us for almost 10 years, and in this social and cultural context, we feel the time has come to intervene” due to “popular dissatisfaction with mismanagement, hypocrisy and corruption,” says the sculptor and ceramist.

Carlos Oliveira created this piece in 2014 with a twelve-centimeter-tall model, which he later transformed into the now-exhibited work, over two meters high. The Mangito features the Malibu Ninjas duo.
