Venezuelan government again demands freedom for Alex Saab

This Sunday, the Venezuelan government reiterated its demand for the release of Colombian businessman Alex Saab, who was arrested in the US on charges of money laundering, saying his health was “at risk”.

The Foreign Ministry of Caracas noted that this Sunday marked the fifth anniversary of the appointment of Alex Saab as a diplomat and that his health is currently “at risk due to the lack of proper medical care.”

On March 16, Saab’s wife Camila Fabry asked the US government to negotiate the release of her husband from prison, whose life she said was in danger in a Florida prison where he was placed in October 2021.

The wife then asked United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and UN Secretary-General António Guterres to speak out against the “violation” of rights that Alex Saab would be the victim of, for which she asked for “immediate freedom”. .

The businessman suffered from cancer and, according to his doctor, suffers from anorexia, anemia, hypothyroidism, hypertension and other diseases, according to the Efe agency.

While traveling to Iran on behalf of Venezuela with a diplomatic passport as a “special envoy” of the Venezuelan government, his arrest placed Cape Verde at the center of an international dispute and public pressure from several countries.

After 16 months of litigation in Cape Verde and international courts, with dozens of appeals from its lawyers, the Cape Verdean Constitutional Court dismissed the latest demands of Saab’s defense and on October 16 authorized his extradition to the United States in the face of domestic and foreign criticism, namely in Venezuela, for prospective surrender to North American demands.
