The temporary salary increase will be paid to civil servants from May 20, with an adjustment to the withholding mechanism, and to the most vulnerable families from May 16, the finance minister said on Tuesday.
Fernando Medina put forward these dates during a hearing at the Commission on Budget and Finance (COF) as part of a petition submitted by Chega for zero VAT measures on a food basket determined by the government.
“An emergency increase for civil servants will be paid retroactively from May 20 until January of this year, with the plan to adjust the retention mechanism so that this increase does not affect employees this month,” he said.
In March, the government announced a temporary salary increase of 1% for civil servants this year, as well as an increase in the food subsidy from 5.20 euros to 6 euros.
With regard to the €30 support for the most vulnerable families and the €15 emergency surcharge per child and teenager for family allowance recipients, the minister indicated that they would have “a payment date of May 16”.
Fernando Medina also stressed that the reduction of VAT on food products to 0% will come into force on April 18, and support for agricultural production during the first half of the year, which, however, depends on the European Commission.
