About 30,000 people live in extreme poverty in Sao Tome and Principe.

The Sao Tome Social Security Authority announced on Tuesday that 29,649 people from 7,581 households live in extreme poverty and have been included in the Unified Social Registry (CSU) to help identify support programs.

“We know that not all of them have been identified yet. [as pessoas] and that scares us. From the group that we have already been able to identify, we already have this number, imagine when we can expand the registration even further,” commented Nuria Seita, director of the department for social protection, solidarity and family, in statements to Lusa.

CSU Sao Tome Principe was developed last year with the support of the International Labor Organization (ILO) with the aim of identifying in the first stage all “people living in extreme” poverty and “who still need social programs from the government.” , and later all the families of São Tomé.

According to data released during the registration presentation workshop, 5,539 (73%) families living in extreme poverty are headed by women and 2,042 (27%) are headed by men.

“Unfortunately, women have suffered the most, because we have many women who are single mothers and are responsible for the family, so the female face is more representative,” emphasized the director of social protection of Sao Tome.

The registry also lists 602 people with mental disabilities, 1,526 people with mobility impairments, 1,711 people with visual impairments, and 423 households marked with children at risk of abandonment.

“These are alarming numbers that are drawing our attention and will continue to do so,” Nuria Seita assured.

Sao Tome’s Director of Social Protection stressed that CSU is an “additional asset” that will provide “rapid access to these vulnerable families” so agencies can “expedite the delivery of assistance.”

However, the Decree-Law regulating the CSU was approved by the Government last year and has since been awaiting promulgation by the President of the Republic.

“This seminar also became a warning about the need to adopt a decree-law,” said Nuria Seita.
