Guterres criticized in secret US documents

The United States believes that UN Secretary General António Guterres is “too willing” to accept Russia’s interests, according to a BBC report based on classified US documents on Ukraine.

The BBC claims documents posted on social media contain remarks by António Guterres “and several African leaders” about the war in Ukraine, and one of the secret files concerns a grain shipment that is part of an agreement signed last year between Ukraine . and Russia, after the intervention of the UN and Turkey.

The document reportedly suggests that António Guterres was so interested in keeping the agreement alive that he was “ready to accept” Russian interests.

“Guterres emphasized efforts to improve Russia’s export capabilities (…), even if it concerned Russian entities or individuals under sanctions,” the BBC said, citing the same classified file.

Guterres’ actions in February last year, according to an assessment allegedly contained in the same US documents, “undermined broader efforts to hold Moscow accountable for actions in Ukraine.”

According to a news report signed by British public television journalist Paul Adams, recently released classified documents show that Washington is “keeping a close eye on António Guterres.”

“Several documents describe private correspondence between Guterres and the UN assistant secretary general,” the BBC said in a news report published this Thursday on the station’s official portal.

The BBC report also states that “UN officials [que não são identificados] clearly dissatisfied with the American interpretation of Guterres’ efforts,” said the UN Secretary General, who made his “disagreement with the war” very clearly.

On Tuesday, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said the US administration is “taking very seriously” its investigation into alleged Pentagon documents posted on social media.

“I can’t say much because the Justice Department is investigating, but we’re taking this matter very seriously,” a senior Pentagon official told a press conference.

Over the past week, several U.S. military and intelligence documents dated February and March have been posted on social media regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine and allegedly detailing the “West’s” plans to support Kiev.

The documents, the authenticity of which has not yet been officially confirmed, also indicate that the United States was following some of Washington’s allies, such as Ukraine, South Korea or Israel.
