France has approved a law to be enforced during the Paris 2024 Olympics that includes the use of algorithm-based surveillance cameras to detect potential security threats more quickly.
The French Ministry of Sports said in a statement released on Wednesday evening, shortly after parliamentary approval, that the installation of these devices will be carried out under “strict conditions and on an experimental basis until March 31, 2025.”
At the end of 2024, the merits of the new legislation, based on experience gained during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, will be assessed, although it could be implemented already at the Rugby World Cup organized by France. from September to October of this year, in which the Portuguese team will take part.
The aim is to “detect serious security threats more quickly using algorithm-based image processing” which will also “make control over sports facility entrances smoother”, avoiding out-of-control situations like those that occurred in May 2022 of the year, Paris, the Champions League football final between Real Madrid and Liverpool.
