Temperatures peak above 30 degrees since Saturday

Temperatures will rise sharply above the April average on Saturday and Sunday, with maximum temperatures expected to exceed 30 degrees, especially in Alentejo and the Tagus Valley, meteorologist Patricia Gomes said.

Speaking to Lusa, a meteorologist from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) said that rain is still predicted in the northern and central regions this Friday, with more frequency in the coastal areas of Minho and Douro, but a slight increase in temperature is already forecast.

“The biggest rise will be tomorrow, Saturday, when it is expected that in some places of the country it will be strengthened. We are talking about fluctuations compared to this Friday between 6 and 8 degrees. rise in temperature in coastal areas, and there we will have very high temperatures throughout the territory. We are talking about values above 30 degrees in some places, such as the Alentejo and the Tagus Valley region,” he added. .

According to Patricia Gomez, Monday will be the hottest day with temperatures between 28 and 29 degrees and in some places over 30, with values close to 34 degrees in the Tagus and Alentejo valleys.

“It will be a relatively punctual situation. Temperatures will start to rise this Friday, but from Tuesday the 18th, temperatures are expected to drop gradually. In the first days of the week, the values will be high and in the end, many places are returning and have more usual temperatures for this time of year between 20 and 25 degrees, in Alentejo it will be higher,” he said.

The IPMA meteorologist stressed that temperatures are above normal for this season.

“In some places we are talking about fluctuations of 5-7 degrees above normal for this time of year,” he said.

According to the weather forecast for the next few days, the risk of rural fires will increase in mainland Portugal.

“The risk of fires in rural areas will increase due to temperature values. The synoptic situation leads to dry weather. Relative humidity values will be relatively low, especially in the hinterland and in the Alentejo areas, and due to winds that will be more intense at times, especially in mountainous areas. This complex of factors will somewhat increase the danger throughout the country,” he concluded.

According to IPMA, the municipalities of Tavira and Sant Bras de Alportel in Faro district remain at the highest risk of rural fires this Friday.

IPMA has also placed the municipalities of Sardoal and Masao (Santarén), Gavian (Portalegre), Aljezur, Lagos, Portimão, Monchique, Silves, Loulé, Alcoutim and Castro Marim (Faro) at a very high fire risk.

More than 40 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Beja, Évora, Leiria, Santarém, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Viseu, Guarda and Bragança are also at high fire risk.

By Tuesday, IPMA predicts an increase in the risk of a fire that will spread to a large area.

The fire danger defined by IPMA has five levels, from minimum to maximum.

Calculations are made based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and precipitation over the past 24 hours.
