Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) said this Friday that there was no debt forgiveness, which was “fully repaid” by a loan to PS MP Carlos Pereira, who this Friday announced his resignation from the TAP parliamentary committee of inquiry.
“CGD confirms that there was no debt write-off because the agreement was for an amount that was considered legal at the time,” the public bank said in a statement.
The financial institution guaranteed that, under the contract, it was “fully reimbursed” for the borrowed capital, to which interest was added.
“CGD clarifies that the loan is the result of non-compliance by a company that was declared insolvent, whose process ended due to insufficient assets, without any payment to creditors,” he added, noting that despite banking secrecy, he had permission from MP Carlos Pereira to disseminate information.
PS’s coordinator in the TAP commission of inquiry, Carlos Pereira, said this Friday that he would leave this parliamentary body in order to be able to give it the “necessary calm”, ending what he called “a climate of suspicion”.
The decision comes after Correio da Manhã newspaper broke the news on Friday about a proposed write-off of a portion (€66,000) of Carlos Pereira’s debt as a guarantor of the company, which went bankrupt in 2015.
The socialist deputy expressed hope that this decision would end “the atmosphere of suspicion, insinuation, speculation” that, in his opinion, was hovering over the commission investigating the TAR case.
Carlos Pereira also denied that he decided to leave due to anticipation of an unfavorable opinion from the parliamentary transparency committee regarding his participation in a meeting with government advisers and the executive president of TAP on the eve of parliamentary hearings.
The Socialist MP said that he did not do so because “there was a forgiveness of debt” by the Caixa Geral de Depósitos, adding at the time that it was “a lie that there was a forgiveness”, service or incompatibility.
