Nearly a million people in Mozambique need help due to cyclones and cholera

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that 975,000 people in Mozambique are in need of assistance due to cyclones and the cholera epidemic.

In a document released on Monday, OCHA indicated that the Zambezia province in the center of the country was hardest hit, with half a million people affected.

Cholera broke out after the February and March storms, especially after Cyclone Freddy, which caused the country’s worst epidemic in a decade, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The disease has claimed the lives of 124 people in the country since September, according to official figures.

According to OCHA, 40 organizations are involved in providing humanitarian and emergency assistance with the goal of reaching 80% of the estimated population.

Half of the actors are international non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

The activities have already reached about 300,000 people and about $138 million (€125 million) is needed to continue on the ground.
