According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the municipalities of Portimão, Silves, Loulé, Sant Bras de Alportel and Tavira in the district of Faro pose the highest rural fire risk this Wednesday.
IPMA has also placed more than 70 municipalities in Faro, Santarem, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Leiria, Coimbra, Guarda, Viseu, Vila Real and Bragança in a very high fire risk group.
Several municipalities in all areas of the mainland, with the exception of some municipalities in Aveiro, Porto and Viana do Castelo, pose a high fire risk this Wednesday.
IPMA predicts a very high fire risk until at least the end of the week.
According to the Institute for Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), 2,083 forest fires have occurred since the beginning of the year, and 7,355 hectares of rural areas have been burned.
The fire danger defined by IPMA has five levels, from minimum to maximum.
Calculations are made based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and precipitation over the past 24 hours.
IPMA predicts cloudy skies for the continent as a whole, occasional moderate afternoon winds, pronounced nighttime cooling and lower temperatures, especially highs, for this Wednesday.
Minimum temperatures will range from 7 degrees Celsius (in Braganza) to 15 (in Coimbra, Porto and Faro), and maximum temperatures from 22 (in Guarda) to 32 (in Santarém).
