Drinking tea, coffee and water helps type 2 diabetics reduce the risk of premature death

Research conducted by the National Library of American Medicine and published CNN International states that people with type 2 diabetes should prioritize beverages such as tea, coffee and water as they can reduce the risk of premature death associated with any disease by 25%.

However, drinking more sugary drinks increases your risk of developing heart disease by 25% and your risk of dying from a heart attack or other cardiovascular disease by 29%. Research shows that cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death among people with type 2 diabetes.

“Based on our research, I would rank plain coffee, unsweetened tea, and water as healthier than low-fat milk, fruit juice, or drinks with artificial sweeteners,” said Qi Song, an assistant professor at Harvard Public Health School. “Sugary drinks such as colas or juices high in sugar and whole milk high in saturated fat are known risk factors for type 2 diabetes and premature cardiovascular disease,” he added.

Another study published in BMJ magazine, analyzed the dietary data of nearly 15,500 adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the United States. About 75% of the respondents were women, with an average age of about 61 years. Every two to four years, for an average of 18 years, the participants answered questions about their consumption of eight types of beverages – drinks with artificial sweeteners, coffee, skim and whole milk, water, tea and sugary drinks.

In the study, sugary drinks were defined as caffeinated and non-caffeinated soft drinks and fruit juices. For this type of drink, they determined that more than one drink per day would be considered high consumption and less than one per day would be considered low consumption.

According to the authors of the study, consumption of four cups of coffee, two cups of tea, or five glasses of water and two skim milk per day is considered excessive consumption.

The results showed that people with the highest consumption of sugary drinks had a 20% higher risk of dying from any cause than those who consumed the least.

The study showed that mortality from cardiovascular diseases increased by 29%. The risk of premature death increased by 8% for each additional serving per day.

On the other hand, the researchers noticed that consuming large amounts of coffee, tea, water, and skim milk was associated with lower mortality compared to consuming small amounts. The risk of death associated with drinking coffee decreased by 26%, tea – by 21%, water – by 23%, skim milk – by 12%.

Coffee consumption is associated with an 18% reduction in cardiovascular disease. A study showed that consumption of low-fat milk reduced the likelihood of developing heart problems by 12%.
