The President of Angola congratulated the Portuguese on the revolution of carnations

The President of Angola on Tuesday congratulated the Portuguese people on the Day of the Carnation Revolution, stressing that this date strengthened the democratic system, which today is the axis of “close and mutually beneficial bilateral relations” between Angola and Portugal.

In a message addressed to his colleague Marcelo Rebel de Souza, João Lourenço rejoiced at the date of the revolution that ended the dictatorship in Portugal and “marked the beginning of the construction of a new political architecture.”

He also emphasized that the cooperation between the two countries “has been very comprehensive and fruitful”, demonstrating that he is “convinced that the efforts made to expand it can continue to bring tangible benefits to the Angolan and Portuguese peoples.”

On April 25, 1974, a military movement in Portugal overthrew the government of Marcelo Cayetano, Salazar’s successor, initiating a process that was to lead to the establishment of a democratic regime and the end of the colonial war.
