The municipalities of Sant Bras de Alportel and Tavira in the district of Faro pose the highest fire risk in the countryside this Wednesday, with temperatures in excess of 30 degrees expected in parts of the country.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has also placed the municipalities of Lagos, Portimão, Monchique, Silves, Loulé, Alcoutim and Castro Marim (Faro) in a very high fire risk group.
More than 30 municipalities in the districts of Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Santarém, Beja and Faro are in high fire risk this Wednesday.
IPMA predicts temperatures will rise above 30 degrees Celsius over the next few days, with fire risk between “maximum and very high” in the north, center and Algarve from Thursday.
On Tuesday, an IPMA statement indicated that the gradual increase in temperature, in particular the maximum values, is due to “a mass of hot air originating in North Africa and carried in the circulation of an anticyclone located near the Iberian Peninsula”, which will gradually reach the Portuguese mainland in the coming days. .
Therefore, IPMA predicts that the highest maximum temperatures will be “very likely” on Thursday “inside the southern region, Ribatejo and Beira Baixa, ranging from 33 to 35°C and can reach 37°C very locally.”
According to the Institute for Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), since the beginning of the year there have been 2,202 forest fires, and 7,456 hectares have been burned in rural areas.
The fire danger defined by IPMA has five levels, from minimum to maximum.
Calculations are made based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and precipitation over the past 24 hours.
IPMA predicts warm weather on the continent for this Wednesday with some cloud cover, some very cloudy weather with high cloud cover, generally light winds and a slight increase in maximum temperature.
The minimum temperature will range from 10 degrees Celsius (in Bragança) to 19 (in Faro), and the maximum from 21 (in Viana do Castelo) to 33 (in Beja).
