More than half of the population of Hego Euskal Herria buys online on a regular basis

Clothing, footwear and accessories account for almost 68% of online purchases, followed by far by household goods.

More than a half of the population of Hego Euskal Herria buy now online on a regular basis. The fact that 90% of the population has access to an electronic device increase the number of potential buyers and online shoppers. In addition, consumers are increasingly feeling more comfortable with e-commerce and have normalized the digital purchasing process.

The covid-19 pandemic has also boosted this trend towards online shopping. In 2019, only Navarra, Madrid, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands exceeded 50% of the people who bought online. In 2021 all the autonomous communities (except the Canary Islands) exceeded 50%.

In 2022, 57% of the population of Hego Euskal Herria has made purchases online on a regular basis, that is, at least once every three months, according to data from the recent EITB Data study on retail trade, the evolution and shopping habits trends.

This percentage of 57% is far from the number of online purchases made in countries such as France (66%), Sweden (78%) or Denmark (82%). The reasons that explain the greater online consumption in those countries is that the physical distance between businesses is greater, the climate for shopping is more adverse and the habit of “wandering” is not so common. In addition, in these countries there is a history of other forms of distance sales such as catalog sales.

According to the data analyzed in the EITB Data report, the millennial generation is the main protagonist of online shopping. Young people between the ages of 25 and 44 buy more frequently on digital platforms. Almost 78% say that they are a regular buyer or buyer.

What products do we buy online?

Clothing, footwear and accessories stand out above all, followed at a distance by household goods (tableware, furniture or toys), sports equipment, personal care and hygiene, food, and electronic equipment.
