The Bizkaia Provincial Council will invest €27.7 million between 2022 and 2027 so that the 1,300 kilometers of roads in Bizkaia have LED lighting. The deputy for Infrastructure and Territorial Development, Imanol Pradales, today explained that the foral entity hopes to reduce consumption by up to 50% and the bill by 30%.

Likewise, he explained that the Department of Infrastructures and Territorial Development has been carrying out these migrations since 2015, so that currently 20% of the 40,053 luminaires in the network are already LED.

As reported by Pradales, this investment will help the territory’s road network to have efficient and energy-sustainable lighting.

Of the total 40,053 light points on the Bizkaia road network, 16,252 are open-air streetlights and 23,801 correspond to tunnel lighting.

Pradales has highlighted that, unlike the traditional sodium luminaires (VSAP) used up to now, the LED system will allow the intensity to be adjusted to adapt the lighting to traffic changes or possible changes in the characteristics of a road, all without need for physical access to the luminaire and controlled from the regional command centers.

The Provincial Government will “get ahead” of compliance with the Basque Energy Sustainability Law, which marks a 35% decrease in consumption for the administrations by the year 2030, according to Pradales.

Next week a first investment of 10 million euros will be tendered.
