The lawyers were surprised to hear the information from the judge: the verdict in the case of the death of PSP agent Fabio Guerra (beaten at the age of 26 outside a nightclub in Lisbon in March 2022) was not known this Wednesday, as the Court confirmed to the prosecutor’s office: two crimes for which the defendants answer – former marines Vadim Grinko and Claudio Coimbra, must have aggravated circumstances, while corporal crimes turn into attempted murder. In addition to the crime of unfinished murder – in the case of Fabio Guerra – the defendants risk being sentenced to the maximum sentence, 25 years, from a legal standpoint.
For defense lawyers, this does not bode well. Claudio’s lawyer also stated that it was invalid and that the change in law could not be reported at the time. The judge understood that she would react to this position on May 29, the new date for the verdict.
José Teixeira da Mota, Vadim’s lawyer, also argued that his client should be released and cited excessive detention. The judge objected to him, noting that abstract sentences over 8 years provide for longer periods of restraint. Which in this case means another four months until the decision of the first instance becomes final (they were imprisoned for 14 months).
