In the opinion of the Minister of Economy and Finance of the Basque Government, “maintaining transport subsidies without further criteria would not be desirable”. In this sense, he has criticized “the lack of coherence” of the Government of Spain.

“What you can’t do is generate a certain addiction to all citizens by offering help and then taking it away when they still need it.” This was expressed by the Minister of Economy and Finance of the Basque Government, Pedro Azpiazu, in reference to the public transport subsidies of the Spanish Government. “We understand that the change in attitude of the Spanish Government is very open to criticism”, he said, in an interview on Radio Euskadi.
Precisely today, the Basque Parliament debates in a plenary session on whether or not to maintain these aids for users of public transport in the BAC. Azpiazu understands that “maintaining aid without further criteria would not be desirable”, although he considers that “it would make some sense to maintain aid throughout the first half of 2023” and assess the situation at the end of that period “always depending on the level of inflation”. “We cannot keep subsidies at the margin of the level of inflation,” he has indicated.
In any case, he added, “the decision corresponds to the Euskadi Transport Authority and the rest of the competent institutions in the field of transport”. “It will be up to me to find the resources and financing. We would be talking about 72 million euros,” she has qualified.
Asked about the budget negotiations, he criticized the attitude of the opposition groups which, in the opinion of the person in charge of the Economy, “did not seek agreements from the beginning”. He has accused them of proposing measures “out of reality” that are impossible to fit into the “budgetary framework.” As he has said, “all the opposition has been on that side and they have not wanted an agreement.”
On the other hand, without going into details, he has advanced that in January they will begin a debate and reflection on the current tax model. “You have to make an assessment, put the numbers on the table, analyze the fund and seek an equitable and progressive tax system. It is a tax system that has to meet many conditions,” she said.
Finally, regarding the agreement reached between the parliamentary group of EH Bildu in Congress and the Government of Spain according to which it will be the foral estates that manage the taxes on banks and electricity companies, Azpiazu has indicated that this information is not correct: ” They will know what they have sold or bought, but the haciendas will not collect that tax, since it is not a tribute specifically, it is a patrimonial compensation that we must negotiate. We have been talking about this for a long time.”
