A resident of Guru district, central Mozambique, was beaten to death by the populace on Saturday after a family member was accused of spreading cholera, a police source told Lusa on Monday.
People went to the residence of a community leader from the village of Ruache, who was rumored to be spreading cholera in the region, but did not find him and ended up attacking his son-in-law, community spokesman Sidner Lonzo said. The 34-year-old man was beaten with sticks and stones and died on the way to the hospital.
“We arrived at the village around 12:00. [11h00 em Lisboa] and we found that he was already on his last legs, ”the spokesman added, noting that the police had identified the agitators, but had not yet detained anyone.
Mass killings, when groups of residents decide to take the law into their own hands, are not uncommon in rural communities in Mozambique.
In one of the most shocking cases, which took place a year ago, seven people, including three Mozambican police officers, were buried alive by people in Maluane, Maputo province, accused of stealing livestock.
