Commando soldier who underwent cardiorespiratory arrest has already received a transplant

One of the soldiers hospitalized after cardiac and respiratory arrest in the 138th command course has already received a liver transplant. The intervention came just hours after it was realized at the Curry Cabral Hospital in Lisbon that the soldier needed an operation.

“The President of the Republic, through the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, is monitoring the health of a commando soldier who has been hospitalized at the Curry Cabral Hospital. The important fact that the transplantation was performed this morning is noted. [domingo] and formulates new best wishes,” reads a note published on the website of the Presidium of the Republic.

On Saturday evening, the hospital reported that, despite liver failure, the condition of the recruit is considered stable. The second soldier is also hospitalized. There are also records of four other trainees who were taken to das Forças Armadas hospital due to symptoms of fatigue. All of them are written out. In the meantime, the course has been suspended pending completion of the investigation.

“Very different situations”
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said this Sunday that the case of military internees appears to be “completely different” from what happened six years ago, when two young men died during an exercise. “It was much more dramatic than in 2016,” the head of state said.

Two soldiers died
The Commando course lasts 14 weeks and requires both physical and mental effort. In September 2016, Hugo Abreu and Dylan Silva passed away after suffering heat stroke on the first test of the 127th course.
