All tickets for the Women’s Champions League final on June 3 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, have been sold out, UEFA announced on Tuesday.
The European football governing body said in a statement that the final between Barcelona and Wolfsburg “is the first to be sold out since the tournament was renamed in 2009/2010.”
UEFA says “more than 34,100 tickets have been issued, meaning the final will break the attendance record for a women’s football match in the Netherlands, previously set in 2019 when the Netherlands faced Australia – also at the PSV stadium. , in front of 30,640 spectators”.
Nadine Kessler, UEFA CEO, in statements released by the body, believes that the fact that tickets have been sold out is a sign that women’s football has reached a new level.
“This is the first time we’ve sold out tickets to a Women’s Champions League final. And this is another sign that there are a few weeks left before the end, that we have reached a new level. The number of fans wishing to travel with their team has also grown significantly. Each team has managed to transport more than 4,500 fans, much more than before,” he said.
The general secretary of the Netherlands Football Association (KNVB), Gijs de Jong, said it was “remarkable” to learn that this would be the first sold-out final, and stressed its importance to the sport in the country.
“By bringing games like this to our country, we hope to inspire girls and women to get even more involved in football – to become players, coaches, managers, referees or fans.”
In 2014, the Restelo stadium in Lisbon hosted the Women’s Champions League final, in which the German team from Wolfsburg beat the Swedish team from Tirezo 4:3.
