‘Retribution’ Review: It’s a Taken Parody, but Nobody Plays Bad Dad Like Liam Neeson

If there’s one thing we know about Liam Neeson, it’s that he will find you and kill you. TakenThanks to his memorable menace and abusive father, he was a huge success and became a legend in the history of cool movie quotes. This is also a clear template for retribution with its quick cuts, nervous close-ups of the protagonist’s face and high-speed chases through the streets of Berlin.

This story is also so well known that it has almost been learned by heart: Matt Turner (Of course, Neeson is always good value for money as the focused and angry father) works for a successful financial company, has a wife (Embeth Davidtz) and two children , Zach (Jack Champion) and young Emily (Lilly Aspell). He is driving his children to school when he learns from a mysterious and confusing phone call that his car is rigged with powerful explosives and pressure plates on the seats, meaning that any attempt by him and his children to escape will result in one. Catastrophe. (And if in doubt, this is effectively demonstrated to him when he witnesses the explosion of a friend who is also threatened by a bomb.)

Neeson is forced to meet the ever-increasing demands of the monster at the end of the line. He races through the mean streets of the city, fighting off the authorities who consider him a bad guy, and trying to outwit a greedy terrorist. Europol agent Angela (Noma Dumezweni) tries to provide assistance over the phone and becomes his eye in the sky on his hellish journey to save his children.

One of the series’ best cliffhangers is an excellent thrill ride in which the killer discovers a secret account belonging to Turner’s CEO (Matthew Modine, perfect as the unctuous and unreliable financier) and demands the money in it, only to set up a meeting later to conclude an agreement. up, where he demands that Matt shoot his boss in exchange for the lives of his children. When Matt refuses, all hell breaks loose as gunshots and shrapnel fly across the screen in a moment of real, dizzying danger.

retribution could be what was once called straight-to-video material, even with strong anchor turns from Neeson and Modine. But if you know what you’re getting into, it’s still a lot of fun: one-on-one car chases, real emotional investment from a concerned father worried about his children’s well-being, and a good old-fashioned race against the clock.

No frills and no ambitions – John Wick It’s nothing more than a good time. And guess what? This.
