The Artium will remember Chillida and Basterretxea on the centenary of their birth

The Artium contemporary art museum in Vitoria will have an extensive exhibition program next year, highlighting the two exhibitions it will dedicate to Nestor Basterretxea and Eduardo Chillida on the centenary of their birth.

And in 2024 the centenary of the birth of two of the most significant Basque artists of the 20th century will be celebrated: Nestor Basterretxea (Bermeo, 1924-Hondarribia, 2014) and Eduardo Chillida (San Sebastián, 1924-2002).

In the case of Nestor Basterretxea, the museum will explore from May 10 his legacy in the field of cinematography, after receiving the donation of the artist’s archive from his family: films such as the experimental ‘Operation H’ will be able to be seen as well as such as projects that were incomplete or that were never carried out.

For its part, the exhibition dedicated to Eduardo Chillida, titled ‘Chillida. Applied Uses’ will reveal, starting on November 15, his facet as an illustrator and creator of two-dimensional shapes and icons.

One of the first initiatives of the year will be the one included in the Sala Z program, which explores the field of the moving image in the museum space. Starting on January 12, the film by Moroccan artist Randa Maroufi (Casablanca, 1987), ‘Bab Sebta’ (The Gate of Ceuta), will be shown, followed by ‘Edonor denok inor ez’ (Anybody, everyone, nobody).

On April 26, Vista partial’ will be inaugurated, an exhibition by Ibon Aranberri (Itziar-Deba, Gipuzkoa, 1969) with a selection of works that extend from the 90s to the present, and on October 18 there will be a drawing exhibition and painting dedicated to Joxerra Melguizo (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1968).
