Two murals from Ondarroa and one from Ibarra compete to be the best in the world

Of the 100 best murals that have been carried out in 2023 Worldwide, three are in Euskal Herriaaccording to the specialized website Street Art Cities, who has started an online vote to choose the best. Voting, which can be done via appwill remain open until next January 31.

When accessing the page a mural of Ondarroa and another of Ibarra appear on the first page among the 50 urban art samples competing for the grand prize and on the second tab, another mural by Ondarroa competes for the award for the “most impressive” mural among a group of 15.

The community of art lovers has selected the list of these hundred most outstanding works from last year, and has opened a period for users to vote and establish the final order.

The flamenco artist Djoels has created his work on a facade in Ondarroa thanks to an artistic residency program promoted by the City Council. Djoels is up for the award for the best mural in the world with a portrait of Gabriel Arrizabalaga, a former fisherman from Ondarroa, who now works as a model maker.

The generational decline of agriculture and cultural traditions are important aspects of the identity of Ibarra and other regions. The mural, which was created using plastic paint over 15 days and measures 33 meters high and 7 meters wide, was sponsored by the Ibarra City Council.

This is a work created on a facade in Ondarroa by the Canarian artist Maias Matan known by his artistic name of Sabotaje al Montaje. “I have worked with photographs from the city’s historical archive to represent the matriarchy and the work of the women of this fishing village, with the colors of Euskal Herria,” said the artist.

The two works by Ondarroa are found in the “Kaminazpi Open Air Museum“Last year’s work.”nets” created in that space in Ondarroa by Murales Lian came in third place in this same competition.

In that edition they also competed a mural from Tudela and another from Pasaia.
