What are your memories of the original film? Hocus pocus?
Oh, it’s difficult because I quickly forget a lot of movies. but Hocus pocus I watched it several times and really liked it. Witches, mood and emotional scenes. This brought me to tears.
How hard it was to find the stars for Hocus pocus 2 to be in front of the camera again?
It was super easy! Adam Shankman, who was originally supposed to direct, then made disappointed and they asked me for a job. So the stars had to agree with me (laughing). I had a studio behind me, and I knew two of the three witches all my life, we are great friends. So it wasn’t a big problem. But at least they didn’t quit when they hired me…
When you first saw witches in full costume, what came to your mind?
Great question, thanks! Of course, I had my own ideas about costumes and sets and everything else, but when Bette and Katie stood in front of me in full costume, it was just surreal. Sarah was still shooting And just like that…but she felt the same. It blew my mind. They’re just the Sanderson sisters, and it’s like time has stopped. They instantly got into character, the chemistry was, it was fantastic!
Hocus pocus 2 perfectly captures the nostalgia for its predecessor and strikes a good balance with the new story. what do you think about it?
A film for the fans who have been waiting for it. When I read the script, I was especially intrigued by the prologue. I love these stories that show where we come from and how we develop. So I asked myself if I could do it. The key word, of course, is nostalgia. We have the black candle, the witches, the city, all of that should have been back in the movie. This is what the fans want to see. But, as I said, the film had to be self-sufficient, that was the difficulty.
Which message from the original was also for me Hocus pocus 2 important?
Of course, we wanted to leave the witches as we know them. But the theme remains sisterhood and friendship. These are the film’s most important messages. There are many scenes that go deeper than meets the eye. But at the end of the day, it’s a comedy that hopefully fans will enjoy.
AT Hocus pocus 2 Feminism also plays a role. So is the movie essentially a comedy? Is this an upgrade?
I wanted to say something not so obvious in the film and didn’t want to shove it in everyone’s face. Many small scenes have critical approaches if you look at them closely. How women were treated in old Salem, and that today we’re not that far along on that, that’s one of the things. But this must be presented not with a steam hammer, but subtly. The beauty cream scene also has a bit more depth to offer. It makes me happy when people talk about such things. If not, that’s fine too. Above all, the film should be fun and entertain the whole family.
