The film, directed by Amirpour, who made a splash with his films A Girl Comes Home Alone at Night and The Bad Batch, revolves around a woman with telekinetic powers who escapes from an orphanage.

Original version with subtitles
Long forgotten in a mental hospital in the swamps of Louisiana, the young Mona Lisa awakens from years of lethargy on the night of a blood moon. Thanks to her mysterious ability to control someone else’s will, she escapes from the orphanage and finds herself on the streets of New Orleans. There, she meets a stripper, Bonnie, who recognizes Mona Lisa’s gift and takes her in. While Bonnie uses the powers of a shy woman to raid together, an affectionate friendship develops between the Mona Lisa and Bonnie’s ten-year-old son Charlie. But the thefts do not go unnoticed, and soon the Mona Lisa comes to the attention of the local police.
Ana Lili Amirpour’s latest film, which was shown at the Venice Film Festival in September 2021 and then a few weeks later at the Zurich Film Festival, also seems to have been somewhat forgotten. In our overview of Venice over a year ago, we called the film a dirty indie version of a Netflix series. Weird things.
After that, the film fell silent for a long time. But now, surprisingly, a release in Swiss cinema is imminent – and very soon.
Mona Lisa and blood moon will be released in theaters in German-speaking Switzerland on October 6, 2022.
