Euskaraz irakurri: ‘Urdaibaiko museoak egin lezakeen ekarpenarekin batera, garrantzitsua da horrekin batera naturguneak zaintzea’
Bingen Zupiria, Minister of Culture and Language Policy and spokesman for the Basque Government, celebrated in the program “faktoria” of Euskadi Irratia the 25th anniversary of the Guggenheim museumand has underlined that “it is not an isolated fungus in the forest, but a symbol of a reformed beech forest”.
Zupiria has affirmed that the museum has filled the town with “pride”. In his opinion, it has become a symbol that has put Bilbao on the map, “because it has attracted foreigners”.
The counselor remembers the 90’s as a time full of difficulties and uncertainties. He has admitted that there were doubts about the urban transformation of the Left Bank, also about the museum.
Twenty-five years after the inauguration of the Guggenheim, Zupiria believes that many of the debates about art are still valid, but that the opinion of the general public is much more optimistic. “In these 25 years, year after year, 200,000 Basques have visited the museum, which also indicates the attitude of citizens towards the museum”, he stressed. According to Bingen Zupiria, in the future the museum must continue to respond to day-to-day challenges, but without losing sight of the energy transition and the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.
Asked about the project to build a new Guggenheim in Urdaibai, He has indicated that he does not know if it will be carried out. However, he sees the team that manages the Guggenheim and the Bizkaia Provincial Council as “very convinced” of the need for this project. “They’re going to work hard to get this off the ground,” he said. In Bingen Zupiria’s opinion, Urdaibai needs to make decisions that make sustainable economic development possible: “A new museum could be of great contribution, but it can also be important to make decisions to continue preserving its natural spaces.”
