“Empire” is a cinema that you rarely watch anymore. Framed by bright lights and a beautiful tent that graciously welcomes everyone on its red velvet seats. Hilary (Olivia Colman) works at the front desk, opens the movie theater every morning and oversees the well-stocked counter. Meanwhile, her manager (Colin Firth) asks her for illegal services from time to time in his office. It’s a grim routine that Hilary reluctantly repeats, but her colleagues all admit she’s calmed down a lot since returning to work after a long absence.

When Steven (Michael Ward) arrives as a new recruit, a bond quickly forms between the two, albeit an unlikely one at first glance. Hiding a difficult past, Hilary struggles with her mental health, while Stephen, a young black man, struggles with the racism that rampant in Britain in the 1980s. Offended by aggression beyond their control, both find refuge and safe harbor in each other, but, like in the movie “Empire” itself, their relationship cannot last forever, and soon they will have to come to terms with the reality of their different lives, deal with the future.

Empire of Light – a film about the magic of cinema according to Searchlight Pictures. For the drama directed by Sam Mendes, as is the case with skyfall as well as 1917 again worked with legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins. So it is not surprising that the first frames Empire of Light looks great.

Empire of Light will be released in theaters in German-speaking Switzerland on March 2, 2023.
