While we in German-speaking Switzerland are still waiting for The Whale to hit theaters, we now know that the film will be shown on the Swiss screen for the first time as part of the GIFF.
Even if hardly anyone in Switzerland WHALE we have seen – we are one of the exceptions – as an avid movie fan, you must have heard at festivals in Venice, Toronto and London that Brendan Fraser is simply brilliant in the drama of Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, mother!). Fraser is said to have a good chance of winning the Best Actor Oscar for his role as an overweight professor. It is not yet known when the film will open in theaters in German-speaking Switzerland. Those who can’t wait any longer travel in November as if to the Geneva Film Festival.
At the festival, the 28th edition of which will be held from 4 to 13 November 2022. WHALE selected as graduation film. The screening will take place on November 12 at the Pitoev Theatre. On the last official day of the festival, November 13, the focus will be on digital technologies.
But GIFF also offers many highlights from days before. Including the first two episodes of the third season of Lars von Trier’s dark hospital series. Kingdom – known to us primarily under the German name “Ghosts”.
The film festival also celebrates the work of Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) — as von Trier, a Dane — who will receive the Geneva Prize and also conduct an online master class. The festival will also host the Swiss premiere of his Netflix series. Copenhagen cowboy celebrated – all six episodes will be shown.

However, GIFF is not only a place for classic forms of storytelling like movies and TV series, but also for experimentation. In the international competition for immersive works, you can again find installations and XR proposals at the intersection of storytelling and technology. As festival director Anais Emery says: “GIFF positions itself as an audiovisual cultural festival in a broader sense. Rooted in an unconditional love of cinema, today he follows with unflagging interest and curiosity the new possibilities that imaging technologies open up for audiovisual cinema.”
A total of 120 works will be presented at the 28th GIFF, including 10 world premieres, 3 international premieres, 5 European premieres and 67 Swiss premieres. Therefore, it is worth visiting Geneva this year as well.
