The wife of a young doctor who died from “unforeseen effects of vaccination” after a rare reaction to the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine is considering suing the pharmaceutical giant in a coroner’s ruling.
Charlotte Harris said she waited more than two years for an investigation to change her husband Stephen’s death certificate from natural causes to a drug-related death certificate.
On Wednesday, the Southwark Coroner’s Court in London held an investigation that found the vaccine caused the death of a 32-year-old NHS psychologist.
Ms Harris, a mother of two from Sevenoaks, Kent, said out of court: “Stephen was found to be fit and healthy and died from the AstraZeneca vaccination. For us, this allows us to continue our legal battle with AstraZeneca. This is written proof.
“[The inquest] brings relief, but does not close. I don’t think we’ll know until we get a response from AstraZeneca and the government.”
She added: “I am very pleased to have two boys who remind me of him every day. I’m just so grateful that I was able to marry such a wonderful man and raise our boys in his honor.
The investigation determined that Dr. Wright suffered a combination of brain stem infarction – or tissue death – cerebral hemorrhage and “vaccine-related thrombosis” after being among the first groups of people to receive the vaccine during the pandemic.
He was taken to Princess Queen’s University Hospital Orpington and transferred to King’s College Hospital in south London when his condition deteriorated rapidly, but the nature of the bleeding made him unsuitable for surgery.
Dr Wright, from southeast London, died 10 days after the first dose of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine in January 2021.
Chief Medical Examiner Andrew Harris called it “a highly unusual and deeply tragic case.”

“He was transferred to King’s College Hospital at 6:39 am but was not eligible for surgery due to heavy bleeding and a very low platelet count.”
Dr. Wright was among a small group of people who had a severe reaction to the sting and are being investigated by public health authorities.

“The payment of £120,000 is welcome but does not adequately compensate for Stephen’s loss to his family. Therefore, we are seeking civil damages by filing a lawsuit against AstraZeneca under the Consumer Protection Act of 1987 on the grounds that the vaccine was not as safe as consumers generally could reasonably have expected.
“The government has agreed to reimburse AstraZeneca for this lawsuit. It is a matter of law on which we will ask the Supreme Court to rule in due course.”
An AstraZeneca spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Stephen Wright and offer our deepest condolences to his family for their loss. Patient safety is our top priority and regulatory authorities have clear and stringent standards in place to ensure the safe use of all medicines, including vaccines.
“Clinical trial evidence and real-life data consistently demonstrate that the Vaxzevria vaccine has an acceptable safety profile, and regulators around the world consistently state that the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks of extremely rare potential side effects.
“The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has granted Vaxzevria conditional marketing authorization in the UK based on the vaccine’s safety and efficacy profile.”
The MHRA continues to monitor the effects of the vaccine. More than 1,300 suspected AstraZeneca Covid vaccine deaths have been reported to the regulatory body to date, out of more than 50 million first and second doses delivered.
