PS Esposende demands that the case of the landslide that claimed the lives of two 22-year-olds on Wednesday in Palmeira de Faro “go to the final consequences.”
Through social media, the opposition party claims that in this municipality, “the law was simply optional, depending on the wishes of the chamber.”
The Socialist Party says it has “strong suspicions that the city council and its president are responsible for what happened, namely the licensing of a newly built building located on a higher level, part of the patio of which collapsed on the house where they were the victims.” And he advances that he will ask the Attorney General’s Office to request an expert opinion from the National Civil Engineering Laboratory in order to establish what really happened.
“The Esposende City Council is known for giving some of them incentives to build on top of water pipes, on escarpments, on main dunes, in violation of land management plans, all without administrative and criminal action being taken by the competent authorities in punishment for numerous lawlessness,” – says the PS message.
A landslide killed Susana Gonçalves and Fabio Veloso, 22, in the room where they slept in Palmeira de Faro, Esposenda, on Wednesday morning. Susana’s mother, two brothers (one more child) and her mother’s partner survived.
The municipality indicated in the first statement that “the licensing process for this house went well, and the existence of any complaints submitted by the owner of this house regarding possible situations that could endanger it is not known.”
The municipality will issue a “municipal alert” in the area affected by the incident from 8:00 pm Thursday, noting that it will proceed with a geotechnical study to be carried out by technicians from the University of Minho to assess the safety and stability of the land in the affected area.
